Little O' This, Pregnancy

Grumpelstiltskin

No, this isn’t a post about my ornery toddler. It’s a post about my foul moods as of late. I don’t know if they can be completely blamed on the pregnancy hormones or not, but I have been a beastly bear for the past week and I just can’t seem to snap out of it. I go back and forth between feeling hopeless and fat and dreary to angry and frustrated and irritable. Lucky, lucky Steve.

I have been battling a bit of morning all-day queasiness and it’s hard to deal with Avelyn when all I feel like doing is quietly dry-heaving into a bucket. And the only thing I seem to want to eat is bread. And butter. Last week I was craving vegetables but the feeling quickly passed. Now it’s Carb Fest ’08 and I am already feeling kind of round, which doesn’t exactly boost my morale.

I know that it’s useless and harmful to focus on the negatives of a situation, especially a situation that is so great in its nature. But this is where I’m at today: tired, grumpy, hungry, chubby.

Did I mention that we’re going to Hawaii in about three weeks? I have never been there before and I know it’s going to be the trip of a lifetime. But all I can think of is what a pasty sausage I’ll be on the beach. A pasty sausage with a grumpy disposition. Who wants that? I should, at the very least, aim for jovial sausage.

  • Once you hit perfect white-sanded beach and gaze on the crystal clear water with palm trees surrounding you, (virgin) pina colada in hand, you’ll be hard pressed to be grumpy! I promise!:) AND when you take a gander at the toothpicky asian touristy men in their teeny little nut huggers, well, you won’t feel so self conscious!:)

  • Oh, man. I know exactly how you feel. I remember when I was first preggo with micah & I could hardly wait to have a tummy. But now, it just came on so soon, I just wasn’t ready for it. Plus, I didn’t loose all the post pregnancy weight yet from Micah. So, the fat stage was even fatter than the fat stage from last time. The only words of advice I have are that the hunger usually subsides around month 4 for a while & on the beach…rest assured you won’t be the fattest one.!!

  • Aw…

Me thinks you need to come over for a play date. And a cupcake ;)

  • The one thing about baby #2, and 3 is the maternity clothes are needed much earlier. Don’t forget that you are starting alot lighter this time and you know how to get the extra weight off when it is time. Hawaii! how lucky!!

  • Put up a beautiful picture of yourself and ask your loyal readers for their most wonderful upbeat comments. You’ll feel better in no time!

  • What if I’m not pregnant, but I feel like that too? I guess I’ll have to find something else to blame that on….!

We all go through these patches once in a while. Don’t bother feeling guilty about it though. I find it’s best to just wallow (that’s why pity parties were invented!) and it will pass before you know it!

And remember: Hawaii, while exotic, is still part of the U.S., and we Americans aren’t known for our calorie counting discipline!

  • Atleast you’ll be nice and warm and I always say a tan works wonders on both appearance and mood. (Which is one of many reasons I should get my butt out of Oregon.)

  • Oh my goodness! Hawaii? And I thought my trip to Puerto Rico was neat… Hawaii wins hands down. Hope you’re feeling back to normal soon!!

  • …I’m still recovering from “nut huggers”…

We (us?) Americans will cast not stones…lots of us are just plain fat, so a pasty sausage from Canada won’t be any big deal! And I bet the warm sun will make you feel like a million bucks! Just don’t forget the sunscreen.

  • Yay for going to Hawaii. My husband took me to Maui two years ago. It was the best vacation I have ever been on. What island(s) will you be visiting? You’ll have to teach Avelyn to say “Aloha.”

I hope you are feeling better soon. I suffered from “all day” sickness until 20 weeks.

  • I became pregnant with Paige when Makenna was 15 months old. With all-day sickness. So I completely and totally understand how you feel.

Feeling sick is GOOD, try to remember that when you are feeling your worst. That often means the pregnancy is strong! :) All that progesterone is making you ill.

I have a feeling that Hawaii will make you feel better :)

  • sorry you’re feeling so yucky. it will hopefully pass soon. just wanted to say congrats too on the second pregnancy!! yeah!
curious though, which island will you be visiting? i spent 6 weeks in maui for work last year and am going there again for around the same time this year. i could give you the hot spots, touristy or not, if you’d like.

  • First, go tanning and get rid of some of that pastiness before you’re off.

Second, let’s go to Kelowna and have a great dinner and see a funny movie with some really fun girls.

    I think that will help!

  • Hawaii? Sweet!!! I hope that you feel better soon.

  • You aren’t a sausage and I’m sure a few minutes in that Hawaiian sunshine and you’ll be feeling perked up.
The grumpies are tough to handle anytime, pregnant they seem worse. But Steve loves you and I’m sure he can handle it. Just remind him if he complains, it’s better to have to deal with a grumpy wife than to spend your days dry heaving into a bucket while chasing a toddler. :)

  • I have been a devoted reader but have yet to comment on any of your posts! Just wanted to say Congrats on the pregnancy and hope you enjoy your trip to Hawaii. Rest assured that there will be many FAT people there, I am sure nobody will pass a second glance at you.

  • Awww! I’m sure you look great – you always do! Sounds like a great trip! Are you taking Avelyn with you or is it a mommy and daddy vacation?

  • my morning sickness was much worse the second time around too – and pregnancy hormones do make you grumpy. I’m feeling very round and chubby at the moment – can’t wait for the third trimester when my belly blocks my view of my thighs – out of sight, out of mind.

  • Oh Hawaii is the best! I long to go back there!! Enjoy yourself. (Oh, and I’m sure you’ll still be one of the thinner ladies on the beaches there.)

  • Tired, Grumpy, Hungry and Chubby… hmmmmmm

That’s the same way I feel every day however unlike you I probably won’t ever be able to experience the joy of a pregnancy.

So count your blessings and enjoy them to the fullest each and every day whether you’re on the beaches of Hawaii (I probably won’t ever be able to go there either) or in Canada.

  • Poor thing. I know how you feel. Now I’m 31 weeks pregnant and feel huge and unattractive. I try to focus on the fact that I am relatively free without an infant attached (on the outside). When I was in the early weeks like you, I felt like crap, too. Now I wish I could have been more active when it was easier. Hawaii sounds wonderful. Have a great time!

  • i’ll be a pasty sausage in st. lucia in march too. so don’t feel bad, especially since i’m NOT pregnant…

  • A baby on the way AND a trip to Hawaii – yep your life sucks!!

  • A trip to Hawaii? The PERFECT thing before becoming a parent of two. PERFECT.

  • From a person who’s been to Hawaii, don’t worry about how you’ll look on the beach! From what I saw, you’ll be the slimmest around by a mile!

    Enjoy your time there!

  • hawaii, how nice, i hope you have a great time and the queasiness will be lessen. I understand the battle with feeling badly and trying to deal with a toddler, it is rough when all they want to do is play and all you want to do is sit very still, i am right there with you.

  • I too am a pasty sausage and my solution before Vegas was the Mystic spray tan. I swear you’re not orange. It goes on even, 8 hours later you’re tan and a week later it’s gone.

I’d check if there’s any reason not to do it while pregnant, but if it’s a go I would totally recommend.

And also, a cute pregnant lady who gets to go to Hawaii? JEALOUS.

  • Oh my goodness, I was feeling the exact same yesterday. I decided to take action and bought the L’Oreal bronzing towels and loved them. My theory is that tan fat is more attractive than pale fat. And girl, my fat is looking tan and I feel about 42% better. Just a little suggestion, if you wanted it.

Hope you get to feeling better!

  • Amanda,
I will be in Hawaii in three weeks as well! Fun! I hope you guys have a great time. As for the morning sickness…that just sucks. Ginger Ale and toasted bagels always help me, maybe it would work for you.

  • I’m sure you’ve gotten a billion suggestions re feeling barfy, but truly truly truly ginger tea is magical!!! It works wonders!
I completely get the feeling grumpy, irritable…I’ve so been there many of times!
Super awesome to be going to Hawaii soon, i’m sure once you see one WARM sunshine, things will change for the better in the mood department.
Nice to see you briefly at tumble time this morning, sorry we didn’t chat. I felt odd. I am getting over a head cold and I can’t completely hear and it makes me nuts having a conversations when i feel like I was yelling at the person, so maybe next week! :)
Heres to hoping you feel better!

  • You have over 30 comments on your post about being grumpy. That is more than I got when I announced the birth of my child. You are too cool.

  • I have a funny feeling that Hawaii will make EVERYTHING better. Hope the “morning” sickness eases up soon!

  • Hawaii will fix everything! And you’ll come home with a tan!

  • I have a feeling Hawaii will help the grumpfest you’ve got going on, and hopefully it will help the queasiness as well. Small carb filled snacks every few hours and plenty of fluids seemed to help me a bit.

You are nowhere near a sausage–you look gorgeous these days and after a few days in the sun and you’ll feel that way too!
