Pregnancy

Name That Kid

“Do you think you’re having a boy or a girl?”  people would ask, early in my pregnancy.

“Well, I am pretty sure it’s a girl since I have double D’s and BACK FAT again, but we’re going to be in trouble when it comes to picking another girl’s name.  Last time we fought for the entire 40 weeks about what to name our baby girl,” I would reply.

Yes, it’s that time again!  Join us as we watch Steve and Amanda butt heads about an appropriate name for their unborn child!   Mayhem ensues.

I love Avelyn’s name.  It suits her perfectly and I can’t imagine her with any other name (no, not even Anneliese).   The thing is, I had never even heard of the name Avelyn before I started scouring the internet for prospective baby names.  I feel like every name I have ever heard already isn’t “the one” and I think I need to come across another undiscovered gem of a name, dust it off, and decide if it’s for my new girl or not.

Here’s where you can help.  Do you know of any unique (not weird, fruity or freaky) girls’ names that we could use?  Perhaps one I might never have heard before?  C’mon, how cool would it be to be able to say that the Internet named my baby?  Very.  That’s how.

  • I have never posted before on your blog, but found it through the Filtering Life blog…..and now I’m addicted to checking both! I have two little girls and I’m of course partial to their names:

    McKenna Elizabeth
    Madeline Elise

    Good luck!

  • I am only 22 and not even close to having babies. I have a secret though, I keep a notebook of favourite names so that when the time comes, I have some ideas. Unfortunately I don’t have the notebook with me, but there are a few that I think would work with Avelyn.
    Nevaeh (heaven spelled backwards!)
    Brooklyn
    Analie
Madeline (I know others have suggested this, but I love the nickname Mady)
    Aliyah
    Good luck!

  • if i got pregnant again. and if it was a girl…
i’d name her Aubrey. i LOVE it.

  • Stealing popular names from other languages may be a good trick. Here are some great Russian names:

Alina, with Lina as the nickname.
    Maya
    Natasha/Natalie
    Mira
    RIta

Also, you can look at some Shakespeare and other lit for older names that may work…

I am preggers again too. Had a girl the first time and used our fav girl names for a first and middle name so we will be in a bind if this one is a girl again. :D

  • I’d tell you the name my husband and I have picked out (sorry, I can’t relate to your clashing over names–we picked one and we both loved it!), but we might have to use it in about 4 months…so I’ll give you my own name and middle name instead (since I can’t take any credit for them!), both of which I love and think are kind of unique: Brier and Leigh. Brier is usually spelled with an a, as in Briar, from my experience. I also have heard and like the name Jordana.
Can’t wait to see what you end up choosing!

  • I like unusual names too. My daughters are named India, Arabella and Adelaide (we call her Ada). I’ve gotten lots of compliments all all three names.

  • Brenna or Cadence (pronounced: kaydense)

Those are my two faves for girls.

Nope, didn’t get to use either of them for my daughter. LOL

  • Elise, Danielle Daniella, Ella

  • Wow, a hundred and eight comments to follow. I don’t have a name, but I have some advice I suppose. We went through a similar episode when naming our second, Grace. We named our first Adora, which was unusual, but it suited her, and I felt a lot of pressure to come up with something similar for the next baby. But all the unusual names I found just seemed weird. So, instead we focused on other things we liked about the name Adora, and tried to find the same qualities in a second name, to keep some kind of continuity. I was big on having a name that was easy to spell, and easy to pronounce. We wanted prettiness with out being exotic. As for the ‘unusual’ factor, it was less important that we’d never heard it before than it was for it to be relatively uncommon among babies these days. We didn’t want her to be the fourth Emily in her class, or so on. Phew, that was long winded. I love baby names. I’m sure you’ll pick a great one, again.
