Family Matters, Little O' This, Pregnancy

A Rose

This morning I exchanged a few emails with my dad about our baby naming adventures.  I told him that one of the names we had been considering was now out of the running since I looked up its meaning to discover it meant “poisonous climbing vine” and was fairly certain that with a name like that I would be guaranteed another frighteningly strong-willed daughter.

Here was his reply:

“…we found out much too late that ‘Amanda’ is actually Swahili for ‘bad-tempered turkey vulture with impacted wisdom tooth’. If only we had called you Stormi*, how life might have changed. ”

*Stormi was actually one of the names my parents considered bestowing upon me.  Crazy hippies.

  • We found out after our daughter that her name (Camryn) actually means “crooked nose”. Nice, huh?

  • […] Original post by amanda […]

  • That is the funniest thing I’ve ever heard (also, my parents were hippies too, THEY NAMED ME AFTER A FLEETWOOD MAC SONG). They are nuts.

  • My parents were hippies in San Francisco, no less. But apparently not very good hippies because could my name have been any MORE popular at the time?

  • Your dad sounds like good people to me!

Can’t wait to find out the name for girlie 2.0!

  • Your Dad is so witty. Always cracks me up. He really could have been a comedian instead of spending his days helping preteen girls buy cute outfits at Suzy Shier.

  • Great Post!

Your dad is a bit off the wall – anyone who likes the Far Side or Hermann tends to be that way. Alas, I like the Far Side and Hermann as well.

You got your oratory & writing skills from your mom….oh, and singing too!

  • Your Dad is funny!
I was going to be Sunny if I was a boy! Lovely….

  • I kind of like Stormi…

  • Love it!

My parents weren’t very creative on the naming front until the third kid came around, his name is Dietrich Wolfgang. Yes, we are German, but still….

  • Perhaps a name that doesn’t start with A.
If Steve is anything like his Dad, you will help him by naming your baby girl with a distinctly different name. (my dad at times, meaning to say my name would yell Steve, Trev, I mean . . . Kaile) I’m dead serious. Just ask Steve.

  • what about Ayla???

  • Hahaha!!! Cute!

  • My name is also Amanda. Mandy for short.

My mom wanted to name me Sheena. I’m thankful to be Mandy.

  • I think Stormi would have been perfect ;)

  • I know someone with a Spanish name, Lenora. I think it means “light.” I think that a lot of the Spanish and Italian names sound pretty. I can’t wait until you announce the winning name.

  • That’s pretty funny. Dad’s are so witty.

  • Oooo! Lenora makes me think of the name Nora. Sounds pretty too.

Hey Amanda aren’t you loving the last minute scramble from all of your readers who never replied to your initial blog months ago asking for name suggestions? We truly are panic-motivated, please love us anyway! :)
