Life of Leisure (Bah!), Little O' This

Makes Me Want To Croup

On Wednesday night Avelyn ralfed all over her crib sheets and the next day she had developed a cough that rivaled the bark of a wounded seal.  Croup.  Yay!  She was running a fever of 102 and hacking the rest of the day and all night long.  I stayed up with her and woke up with some cruel version of the flu that left me achy, exhausted and without appetite (that’s how I knew that something was wrong; if I don’t feel like eating, I must be sick).  We’ve been laying low, drinking lots of fluids and watching more movies than I thought was humanly possible.  I have my strength back today and Avelyn’s cough has loosened into a more normal, phlegmy hack, so that’s good, right?  Oh, and Jolie has just started coughing, so I have a feeling where that’s headed.

I know that these sicknesses are minor inconveniences in the grand scheme of life and that we are so blessed to have a fridge full of food, a warm fire crackling to keep our house warm, and walls around us that keep out the cold.  But that doesn’t change the fact that I am feeling weary and ready to make a mad dash to Hawaii (without the kids) for a week of massages, sun tanning, and pina colada sipping.

Anyone care to join me?

PS:  Thanks to everyone who chimed in with potty training advice.  Nice to hear I’m not the only one with a stubborn kid who enjoys soiling her shorts but that there is still hope for freedom from diapers one day.

  • I for one am also ready for a little Hawaiin respite. Gosh darn it’s cold out. Not very likely although now that you mention it, maybe I’ll crank up the thermostat to 90 and spread a blanket out on the livingroom floor and pretend I’m somewhere away from the ice and snow for awhile…LOL. Hope you’re feeling better. Nothing like a sick child that NEEDS mommy and nobody else will do. I always end up with whatever Lorelei gets because of her needing to be held all the time when she’s not feeling well. Have you tried those Benelyn or Vicks plug ins? They are the best for helping a congested chest or stuffy nose at night.

  • Count me in, I’d give anything for a week of r&r! We spent Wednesday night at the ER with Charlie, who had a very serious bout of croup and needed breathing treatments and steroids, only to all pack up again the next day and hit the pediatricians office for another round of meds. No one is getting any sleep around here, but as you said, it is a total inconvenience but we have so much to be thankful for.

  • *Raises her hand* Take me! Take me!!!

Do a google search for “chest percussion” and give that a whirl. I’ve found that it works best if you lay the child across your lap and have a towel handy for when they start coughing the yuck out.

Hope you all get to feeling better soon!!

  • GAHHH Amanda, seriously girl…you have not caught a break in awhile. I get tired just reading about all the hard knocks let alone living them. So sorry you got the funk in your house too. I am ready to front your trip to Hawaii so you get a break. There is always Vegas in three weeks…I’m just sayin. Wish I could fly you out of there and I would join you in a heartbeat.

  • I’m headed to Hawaii Saturday. I think I might have room in my suitcase for you. =)

  • Count me in too. Bayley is teething and has a cold, possible ear infection. Doctor appt is 9:30 tomorrow morning but we may get iced in tonight so I may have to miss the appt.
