February Mud

Her eyes are staying blue.

Perhaps Mary-Janes weren’t the best choice for such a muddy day.  The above photo says so much about my approach to motherhood:  pajamas pants in the afternoon, mismatched socks and inappropriate footwear.  What more could a kid possibly need?

She could not be cuter.

Her curls are a representation of her personality: wild, untamed, flying off in unpredictable directions.  And totally beautiful.

I’m not a totally unfit mother:  we changed into rubber boots.

She has grown so much this winter.  Spring is (almost) here and I see less toddler in her every day, more big kid.  It’s welcome and saddening at the same time.

May your puddles be deep and dirty!

  • I’m ALL FOR pajama pants in the afternoon. And blue-eyed babes.

  • They are both gorgeous. You’ve inspired me to get out and enjoy the New England slush tomorrow!

  • these are such great photos! I love the mismatched socks (it’s so much easier then trying to find the match – right? We do it on non daycare days, too!)

I love Avelyn’s curls – I can’t believe she and my Maggie are about the same age because M’s hair is half as long. It’s curly, too but it just does. not. grow. However, M also has the “wild, untamed, flying off in unpredictable directions” hair and personality to match – great description!

  • Looks like fun!

  • Same rubber boots as Abby. :) The girls are beautiful!

  • Just wanted to give you an idea on the potty training thing. My friend’s son is the same age (within a couple of days) as Avelyn. She tried potty training him before the holidays and it was horrible. She recently started trying something new (a week or so in) and so far it has worked really well! I don’t know if he was just ready or if it’s the system she “made up.” She started putting him in underwear for 15 minutes (set the timer) every day. If he kept it dry and/or used the potty, he got a sticker. After 5 stickers he gets to pick a treat from her treat basket (little dollar store gifts etc). After a couple of days of success, she ups the timer to 1/2 hour, etc. Within days he was asking to keep his underwear on for a little while longer but then he would say “I want my diaper on” and she would immediately comply. This way he got to have lots of success and little failure/wet/dirty underwear. Today he was dry from 2pm until bedtime and used the potty multiple times. He has done both in the potty and even used a potty (while in a diaper) while out of the house the other day!
So, it may backfire in her face at some point, but so far it’s working. Just wanted to share because I know how frustrated she has been with this issue (and she has a daughter Jolie’s age too!) Good luck – your girls are beautiful! :)

  • Jolie’s eyes are gorgeous. I love those pouty lips and Avelyn’s curls. Beautiful girls!

  • Yay for pj’s all day. And for mud.

  • What a beautiful post of your precious girls. Who cares if the socks match or not! I think that the important thing is to let a kid be a kid and let them play in the mud! Thank God they are washable. Your babies eyes are truly blue and so lovely. God bless!

  • P.S. Great photography by the way. Love it!!

  • Don’t you feel more human when you can take them both OUTSIDE?

  • People who worry about socks matching, real pants in the afternoon, etc., are the parents who wouldn’t let their kids play in the mud.

Jolie’s cheeks and Avelyn’s curls kill me. Adorable, to say the least.

  • I can’t wait to play in the puddles with my little boy!! Great pictures.

  • I love the picture of Avelyn’s curls. And your description of her. Sometimes in the midst of all the chaos our strong willed daughters bring, it’s good to pause and see what an amazing and beautiful gift they are from God. And I think you are a great mom, mary jane’s and all. And your girls are just beautiful.

  • Beautiful. And I’m longing for puddles.

  • I love my little beautiful cousins!!

  • I am so glad you are thawing out. The girls are precious. Thanks for making me smile!

  • I LOVE the new pix of my nieces! Missing seeing ya’ll but will be coming in a few weeks for a visit. :)

  • your girls are so beautiful. maybe we can play in the mud together one day?!

  • I miss my beauties! I can’t believe how much they have both grown in 2 1/2 wks! GIve them a kiss from me.

  • Love these photos! Your girls are so beautiful!!!

  • HA! Your daughter dresses a lot like me. Mismatched socks, always in jammies…and the mud…just replace that with whatever i’m eating because i’m always dropping something on myself!

  • Two things:

    1. Neither of them could be any cuter. Look at those beautiful eyes and those incredible curls!

    2. There is a quote this reminds me of, and it’s one of my favorites, although placenta brain seems to have taken over my life and I can’t remember who said it right now: A child is a curly, dimpled lunatic.

  • Such wonderful photos. You are and always have been such a natural artist. We’ll get you hooked an photography yet.

    Miss you.

Oh and Jolie is SO CUTE!!!!
