Never a Dull Moment

My mom and dad have been here visiting from the prairies and their presence has been well-timed for the inevitable disasters that befall us when they’re near. Literally, less than an hour after they arrived, Karenna tumbled from the sofa’s back onto the laminate floor and now she looks like an aubergine-tinged Elephant Man.

Today, the swelling on her massive hematoma was worse, not better, than the day before so I took her in to the doctor who ordered her to go for a CT scan to see if there had been some skull fracture that was causing prolonged internal bleeding. After waiting an hour at the hospital and telling her all about how fun and painless the scan would be  (“You just have to lay there like a sleeping worm and count to ten and then I’ll give you a HUGE lollipop!”) they called us in and tried to get her to lay down on the scanning board. Karenna lost it. They tried to pin her down and restrain her, but there was no containing her rage. She punted one of the nurses in the stomach when she got close to her and after a couple minutes of writhing they unstrapped her and sent us for a consult with the pediatrician on call. The doctor took a good look at the damage and declared it within the realm of normal and that it wasn’t worth having to sedate her and expose her brain to unnecessary radiation. I think they just wanted to get rid of us.

Life is never dull around here.

In between the sleeplessness, the nasal congestion, nigh terrors, bad attitudes and goose eggs, we’ve had some fun.

I am so very tired.

  • Never a dull moment is right! I have one of those kids with an aversion to anything medical. We took him to the doc to get an apple seed out of his ear (don’t ask) and left with possible concussion as he had wiggled and squirmed, passed out and landed on his head while they were trying to examine him.
I’m glad they didn’t have to put her out, and just will hope it’s nothing but a really pretty looking bruise and a good story to tell her children one day. Wishing you some sleep!!

  • Okay, that eye is colourful! I’m betting it will continue to shine with various colours before it totally heals up and goes away. Looking forward to the photo of instalment when green and blue are the hues. Enjoy the visit with your mama, it is always so nice to have some happy cheer and help around the house!

  • Oh, Amanda. That last line said it all. I wish you many uneventful (or at least injury-free) days and above all, SLEEP, and lots of it.

  • Oh, Mama. I’m so very tired reading about it. But your girls are so lovely, elephant man appearance and all. Hopefully you can catch up on a little sleep while your mom’s in town!

  • Um, clearly didn’t mean I’m tired reading ABOUT it, am just feeling tired by proxy for you. Just wanted to clarify lest you think I turned into a troll. Haha.

  • What Tamara said. Hugs, lady.

  • i never tire of those little faces. Love those girls! And YOU! (and i guess steve too, but ya know, whatever) ;)

  • I hope you get the rest that you need! I love reading your blog, it’s great!

  • Oh, poor baby!
(I’m not sure which of you I meant by that.)
Your girls are so precious. You’re growing them up into beautiful-strong – fragrant – fruit-trees of women. (Don’t know where that came from) One day you are going to feel very rewarded for all of this – and thankful you survived it.

  • I hear you on the tired thing! I’m so glad I’m not the only one…
“they” tell me that it will get better. I have yet to see that happen :)

  • You poor things! I have a flip out in the emergency room kinda little guy too, absolutely no fun. Glad your mama’s there. :-)
