In Summer

Finishing summer strong has never really been my gifting. All of my good intentions fly out the window in this last, meandering, eternal week before school (finally) starts. I let the kids watch 800 shows on Netflix and eat whatever crap they want and fight until everyone is crying because I just don’t have it in me to care anymore.

(Side note: Is it just me, or is BC the absolute latest place ON EARTH where kids go back to school? They don’t go back tomorrow. They go back Wednesday. For, like, 14 minutes.)

When I look back on our summer photos, I see just how many fun memories we crammed into the last nine weeks, and I am thankful. I am just so ready for fall, for some rhythm to the days, for some hours where NO ONE ELSE IN MY HOUSE.

Autumn is when I come alive, and here are my goals for this season:

  1. No alcohol for the month of September. I like to check in with myself a couple times a year and make sure I’m not letting wine become too much of A Thing. It’s a good reminder to be present and remember that I don’t need alcohol to enjoy life, and that it can just be added in every now and again as something to enhance the moment. In the summer, it’s so easy for it to become a staple at every dinner or social gathering. In other words: you should buy stock in La Croix because I’mma gonna drink it all. All of it.
  2. Watch Season Two of This Is Us when it comes out on Netflix. I am going to curl up in my bed and just COMMIT.
  3. Aim to exercise five times a week. I have fallen off the work-out wagon and since I’m such an all-or-nothing person, it’s easy for me to want to just quit everything but I am not going to! My fitness goal for the summer was “to regress only minimally.” Achievement: unlocked.
  4. Organize my closet. I have been wanting to do this for a year.
  5. Cook some good food.
  6. Have the girls pack their own lunches for school. And also do their own laundry. I am pretty over both of those things and it’s time they learned some life skillz.

Happy Back-to-School, all!
