Pregnancy

Name That Kid

“Do you think you’re having a boy or a girl?”  people would ask, early in my pregnancy.

“Well, I am pretty sure it’s a girl since I have double D’s and BACK FAT again, but we’re going to be in trouble when it comes to picking another girl’s name.  Last time we fought for the entire 40 weeks about what to name our baby girl,” I would reply.

Yes, it’s that time again!  Join us as we watch Steve and Amanda butt heads about an appropriate name for their unborn child!   Mayhem ensues.

I love Avelyn’s name.  It suits her perfectly and I can’t imagine her with any other name (no, not even Anneliese).   The thing is, I had never even heard of the name Avelyn before I started scouring the internet for prospective baby names.  I feel like every name I have ever heard already isn’t “the one” and I think I need to come across another undiscovered gem of a name, dust it off, and decide if it’s for my new girl or not.

Here’s where you can help.  Do you know of any unique (not weird, fruity or freaky) girls’ names that we could use?  Perhaps one I might never have heard before?  C’mon, how cool would it be to be able to say that the Internet named my baby?  Very.  That’s how.

  • I like old fashioned names like Moira, Claire, Nora, Alice…

  • Hi I’m de-lurking too on this one. Love reading about your life a lot, thank you for sharing. Favorite names:

Cariad (Welsh for beloved pronounced carry-add)
    Amilea
    Alitha (Irish for truth)
    Sered (Welsh for star)

  • How about Maeve?

  • I love it when people ask the internet what to name their babies because no matter how many “please nothing weird or made-up” warnings there are, the commenters always come up with some real doozies. Not pointing fingers or anything but just pointing out that some people have really broad definitions of what’s “normal.”

That said, I saw someone recommended Taryn, which I think would be lovely. I grew up with a girl named Taryn and she was nice. Also, you have to go for something at least a little unusual what with your last name, and I think that fits the bill.

    Good luck!

  • I am going through the same little girl debate with my husband. We have finally found one we can both somewhat agree on, but now we are stuck for a middle name! Some of the names I liked that he didn’t are:

    Camryn
    Amaya (my favorite name!)
    Mckenna
    Jaelyn
    Devon
    Kylah
    Savannah

    Good luck!!!

  • I like the names Alice and Josephine. Nothing you haven’t heard before, but maybe worth looking twice at.

  • Ellery

  • Girls names are much more difficult for me, but I’ll share our runners up since we might need our first choice this time around.

    Ainsley
    Abigail
    Adelaide
    Ava
    Charlotte
    Caroline
    Eloise
    Emmaline
    Margaret
    Sophia

Apparently I really like names that start with A. Will you be sharing any of your potential choices with us?

  • Your blog is great.

What about the name Alayne. I think it would go well with Avelyn. Good luck in your search.

  • You’ve got quite a list there! Hope you find something that just sticks on ya like white on rice. I think you should name the new baby something out of total fandom, like Wilhemina, (in Will Ferrel’s honor), or Farley.:)You’ll find something you love, fingers crossed Steve loves it too!

  • Hi! Also de-lurking. Love reading your blog! (This is the name my son is planning on naming his baby someday, hopefully his wife likes it!) He wants to use it either for a girl or boy ~ I love it!

    Emery

  • My husband and I are expecting our 2nd child in early
July. It’s a boy this time, so there goes our girl name!
We were going with Maeve if it was a girl. Our 4 year old daughter’s name is Eva.

  • My name is Tiera (like a tear in your eye + ah) and I’ve never met anyone else with that name.
    Also like:
    Amelie
    Avery
    Colby
    Kirby

  • Delurking! But this is too fun. You can use my name, :) or…

    Cameron
    Paige

Avelyn & Paige. How cute is that?

  • Eden

    Hi Amanda,

I found out about you from Kelly P. and I check in on you every once in awhile. I really like the name Eden. I have another fav girl name…but I’m holding out till I (maybe) have a girl. (Right now, I just have one son named Abel.)

Congrats on baby girl #2. Sisters rock! I have 2 of them.

  • Holy crap, Amanda, you’ve got a lot to sort through here.

Mine are all repeats, but I do love them all for various reasons:
    Harper
Charis (it’s the Greek word for an all-encompassing grace – I love meaningful names)
    Jane
    Macy

I can’t wait to find out what you two pick, though. Regardless, she’s sure to be adorable.

  • my new favorite girls name: Harper

  • My cousin named her daughter Alethea. I also have a patient by the name of Alyda.

  • I really like Shelby.

Just a tip – don’t name her Pain, or Swallow (serious! Heard of those!). There would be many jokes about Swallow. :)

  • Hey Amanda,
Just because you needed one more suggestion, I love the name Elia (pronounced eh-lee-ah). It’s a variant of Elijah, and means the Lord is my God. It can also be shortened in all kinds of cute ways (Elle, Elliie, Ella etc.). Good luck with your name search – you did wonderfully the first time, and I’m sure you will pick another perfect name for your next baby.

  • Whatever you pick – please, please, remember this dear child has to live with this name all of her/his life!!
Make it liveable. What may be cute as a child, is not, as an adult.

Too many children are being teased over the wild names their parents have chosen for them. Not to mention the absurd spellings.
Don’t think about the unique, impractical and trendy names out there. You’ve received some pretty wild (aka ridiculous) suggestions.

I’ll be waiting to see what you’ve picked.

  • Ok I have alawys loved my friends middle name Laree. and also i love the names melody and harmony

  • LORELEI
    KARYS
    KAYDEN
    AUDRINA
    MAYA
    PEYTON

  • I commented earlier, but I just remembered another one I liked-Codie. Boy’s name, just spelled different. I also like it paired with Beth as a middle name and she would be called by both–Codie-Beth. Too cute!

  • Some names I’ve heard thrown around, some I liked, some I didn’t:
    Rynelle
    Brielle
    Rinley
    Makenna
    Aubrey (favorite!)
Or you could kick it with The Hills theme and go with Audrina, which is so cute.

  • I think you should name her Steve ;)

    Kidding!

I knew a girl named Tavia, and I always liked it :)

  • I like when siblings names sound good together too.
What about Adria and I liked the one above Macy. Avelyn and Macy sound good together. And Macy Brown sounds so cute!
Good luck, I am super secretive with the names we would use for a baby and since we aren’t done, you get none, sorry. But also we like real weird ones……so ummmm yeah.
Also I agree that Avelyn is SO an Avelyn and it suits her perfect!

  • Oohhh boy – so many good names in there.
    Have fun picking.

  • I was a nanny for a an Everett, but he was a boy :)

I’m kinda proud to see no one came up with the one I suggested earlier, which is Mayla – maybe people think it’s bad? haha I think it’s adorable!

Dying to hear what you and Steve come up with – have you guys got any ideas yet?? Or are you totally blank on this?

  • Also a delerker….
I am obsessed with baby names.. and have been since I was a wee lass! hehe I am far from marriage or having kids for that matter So must live vicariously through you:)
    hehe
I loved reading all the comments cause it gave me more names for my list:)
    hehe
I too am a BIG fan of original yet pretty names… that are unheard of
My great grandma’s middle name (and my cousins first name) is ALIDA (pronounced- AL-EYE-DA) i love love love it!
    Jennaea (jen-ay-ya) is also cute:)
i love the name avelyn so i am sure you will find something equally as beautiful!
Keep us name obsessed readers posted:)

  • Kandi
    Kyla
    Kiera

  • We’re planning on naming our daughter (whenever we get pregnant and have one!) Sloan after my maiden name. It’s different, but pretty and does anyone remember Sloan Peterson from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off? :)

  • Delerker here… We feel in love and named our daughter Laurel. We usually have to correct people because they think its laura and have never heard the name Laurel. But I also like the name Brylee or Brindley.

  • Oh! I forgot Etta. Love Etta.

  • Aliyah is my favorite for a girl. Classic sounding, yet unique.

  • hey ho

delurking to suggest some of the more unusual Irish names in case you might fancy that..

Someone above mentioned that Alitha was Irish for truth; its not. It’s of Jewish origin as far as I know. Firinne is truth in Irish. Just me being pedantic ;-)

    On with the show:

    Siobhán (shiv-awn) Irish for Joan
    Cáitriona (cat-ri-na) Irish for Catherine
Siofra (she-if-ra) means fairy or sprite
Caoimhe (kwee-va) means beauty or grace
Nollaig (null-ig) means Christmas / Noel

and the one i will use if ever i am blessed:

    Saoirse (seer-sha) means freedom

enjoy! You’ll do splendidly; Avelyn is a lovely name…

  • 2 of my sisters names – i’ve always been slightly jealous:

    Natalie
    Kimberley

    Also love the name Gillian

  • Also delurking to pitch in my two-cents. How about Delainey?

  • I love that someone suggested Paige. Ha!

  • Audrey. daniel was going to be audrey. but then he was born with a penis.

  • Well… lots of suggestions but I’ll add my 2 cents. I think that as far as baby names go, if you can picture the name fitting the person just as well at 80 as you can when they are a baby it is probably a pretty solid name. I think it will be interesting when the nursing homes are full of Brittney’s. I just can’t quite picture it yet. (I think that is are perfectly fine name by the way – I just don’t know any seniors with that name – yet) We chose Stella because it was an “older” name but was still cute for a kid, and also there was a family tie. We also like/liked for a girl Blair, Nora -except it doesnt work with our last name,
Else, Ingrid and Imogen. We arent done yet but feel free. Also check out Swistle, she has a baby naming blog too. Great fun.

  • I really like Teegan. Or Teighan. There are different ways to spell it. Also, one of my best friends named her daughter Carmanah. Very pretty.(its actually an area off the west coast trail, I believe) I have 4 boys, so I have a hard time thinking of girl names….you got my two cents. Good luck!!!

  • I like the name Amanavel for Amanda and Avelyn or you can pick Naila.

  • my friend named her daughter afton. hey…if you’re fond of the ‘a’ names, that’s a super cute one! just a suggestion.

  • I just thought of another one…

    FENNA (dutch)

  • Joceyln :)

  • I can’t think of any new ones, but my girls are Addison Jade and Tegan Lilly.
    Good luck!

  • Bertha
