Little O' This, My Girl

Seat 14A

Mercy.

Avelyn was a monstrous flying companion today as we soared from the Okanagan to the prairies.  I understand that a 14 month old is not especially thrilled with the prospect of sitting on her mother’s lap for hours on end when there is walking and running and destroying to be done.  But were the following highlights really necessary:  the writhing in my lap, the throwing of cheese at the innocent man in our row, the sputtering of milk and subsequent hurling of her bottle across the aisle, the kicking, the back arching, the toy destruction, and the refusal to submit to the notion of sitting still and, I don’t know, maybe taking a chill pill?

We arrived safely in my hometown this afternoon and it’s so nice to have our feet on the ground again and be able to set my little beast free so she can run herself ragged.

  • If Avelyn threw the cheese, the man deserved it. Totally.

  • Flights with a young child, a/k/a could be described as oh…”a living hell”?? Sorry you had such a rough time. Poor Avelyn! I’m glad you guys arrived safely. Have a good visit.

  • Glad you made it safely! Talk to you soon :)

  • Sounds like quite the adventure! Now that you’re there, have an awesome time!

  • I’m glad you made it! At least you didn’t get thrown off the plane!! (Have you heard those few stories about people who had that happen to them because the toddler had a fit, or wouldn’t be quiet??? Seriously, who can control a toddler who has something on their mind?!?!)

  • oh no, we are flying from Australia to England early next year. Amy will be 18 months old and she is on our laps the entire way, that would be all 26 hours of flying including one change in aircraft. Oh my word.

  • I`m trying to picture myself in your situation. And try as I may, try as I might…I just can`t. Everytime I do, my vision is followed with me in a room with a padded wall.

  • After travelling once with my son at 18 months, I swore I would never get on a plane with him again.
I stuck to that till he was 5 and he was dream.
    It will get better, promise.

    Enjoy your visit.

  • hi delurking in honor of delurking day! your kid cracks me up. i’ve been reading since your sock post.

  • your green sock post by the way…and also the one where your daughter had that problem with the pooh coming out the back of her diaper…glad to know i am not alone

  • Oi, vey! I’m sorry. But I hope you enjoy your visit with your family!

  • Frankly, I am incredulous that she wrote in your lap. That child is obviously gifted.

  • Oh, the last time we flew with M it was just days before she started walking. We’re booked for a flight in 3 weeks and I’m dreading it. Just trying to corral her at the doctor’s office yesterday was awful. My shining hope is that since the tix were so cheap (like less then $80 round-trip) that we got her own seat on the flight so she’ll be strapped down in her car seat :)

  • When my son was that age we flew to San Francisco from Georgia. He did all right the way out there, what with the running up and down the aisle and flirting with the flight attendants, but the way home he cried for 4 of the 5 hour flight. I have never been so happy to see the Atlanta airport EVER!

    Have fun with your family!

  • Did the man thank you for his cheese snack? Because if not, that’s totally rude of him.

  • You poor thing. Ugh.

  • Exactly why we haven’t flown anywhere since Charlie was born. Well that and the fact that I am deathly affraid of flying, but it is just easier to blame it on being deathly affraid of flying with a toddler.

    Have a great time!

  • Flying with kids is a real challenge. I’ve flown with mine, and I felt pretty desperate! But sometimes you have to do it, so chances are there are other people on the plane who have had the same experience with their kids. I blame the airlines in part for packing us in like cattle. There used to be a little bit of room for the poor kids to get off their parents lap. Hope you have a great flight home!

  • Ohhh, I fear the back arching when I look after my 2 year old nephew! Glad you made it there safe (and sane!)
