My Girl

Toppled

“Be careful, Avelyn,” I warned as she played with the little CD player on the corner shelf in the kitchen nook.  “You don’t want that shelf to fall down.”  I went back to piecing together a ham sandwich for Steve but no sooner had I reached for the mayo jar and I saw the shelf begin to lean in a terrifying fall, landing directly on top of my baby.

Potted plants slid and their clay containers exploded on the tile floor, the glass table top shattered from the impact of the shelf hitting it and glass flew everywhere, books and CDs crashed to the floor.  I sprinted to my screaming baby, thinking the worst, but she was safe.  Nothing had landed on her, no glass or clay had cut her and where she was standing she had actually been protected by a gap in the shelf.  She wasn’t hurt in the least, just more scared than I’d ever seen her.

I could not stop shaking.  Within a couple minutes Avelyn was back to her happy, playful self, but all I could do was quiver with the fright of possibility.  A heavy plant in a glass pot fell with enough force to crack our kitchen table, and my baby’s head was only an inch from the point of impact.

Stupid shelf.  Stupid plants.  Stupid me for putting those stupid plants on that stupid shelf.

I know it might sound like I’m overreacting, but we could have had a very serious incident on our hands.  I was only a few feet from Avelyn when it happened and it’s just so scary to realize how much can change in an instant.

She’s OK and I am so thankful.

I am also wholly convinced that this most recent purchase was a beautiful investment:

Looks like a cute li’l puppy backpack, right?  Well it’s actually a LEASH!

This kid is never going to be more than four feet from my grasp again:

A mom can dream, right?

  • Scary! It’s startling to realize how much can still happen when you are so close by.

Do you dress that nicely every day? Seriously, that is above and beyond what I even wore when I had to go to work everyday. I’m sitting here in grey sweats and a brown tank top, barefoot, with an ill fitting bra and a headband in my hair. haha. I don’t look this bad everyday but I never look as good as you do in those pics either.

Glad Avelyn is safe and sound.

  • Yikes! Glad she’s unharmed!

Will she be wearing the backpack at Light Up tonight? ;)

  • Where did you get that polka dot shirt? I LOVE it!

    I’m glad Avelyn is safe!

  • Maya fell off my bed this week, scary!! and i was downstairs and heard a loud THUMP..follwed by a piercing scream, she was ok too, and i am glad avelyn is ok too :) i also love your shirt, and your glasses :)

  • Oh, so glad Avelyn is alright. I guess there’s many dangers for toddlers that adults might have a hard time seeing. When I was a kid about Avelyn’s age, I climbed up onto the bathroom vanity after my aunt had just left the room from doing her hair. I grabbed her scalding hot curling iron with my hand. Now THAT was painful. It’s one of my earliest memories. My poor Aunt didn’t even know I was lurking around the corner and certainly did not foresee that her curling iron was a danger to me.

  • So glad she’s okay. We’ve had some scary moments in this house, too.
Why you gotta look so hawt? Makes me feel like a GRUNGE because.. ummm… it’s 5pm and I’m still in my pj’s. Yeah, at least my kids are dressed, right?

  • Wow! Scary! Funny after all that talk about death this morning….could’ve been so much worse.
    Also…
That little leash/backback is CUTE! I was too proud to use one with the older kids but there’s nothing holding me back now.

  • Poor Avelyn – and you! It’s amazing how little ones are protected sometimes! I love the doggy purchase, I’m sure it will come in handy! Oh, and you look awesome!

  • Cutest leash on the planet! And you look great.

I’m sorry about the shelf. Thank goodness all is okay, but that doesn’t make it any less scary.

  • Glad little Avelyn is OK. And that leash! I love it. Where did you find it?

  • It really is hard to protect our kids from accidents…since they are accidents! But kids really are tougher than they look. And I love the little backpack with restraint system! It gives kids a little more freedom to be on their feet when you’re walking, but they can’t dart away and get lost or hurt. It will be a very handy purchase.

  • Oh Amanda, that would have scared the poop right out of me. I just reminded Jon the other night that we needed to strap all the furniture to the walls, even the ones that we think will never topple. Better safe than sorry!

    Glad everyone is alright!

  • You are a hot mommy…. and great idea with the leash!

  • If it makes you feel any better I totally shattered both a glass votive and a glass ornament tonight, and narrowly missed Iggy both times. (I’m glad A is OK. Hugs.)

(Oh, and the leash is awesome.)

  • That leash is awesome!

It’s in those moments when we realize what could have happened that we most truly appreciate what we have! Those moments are a blessing!

  • The leash is hilarious!

  • That is frightening. My son recently darted for the edge of a waterfall while we were on vacation and I had nightmares about it afterward.

There is something quite terrifying in what almost happened. And I feel like I should be grateful it did not happen, but somehow my mind keeps replaying what could have happened.

  • That leash is hilarious.

My mom used to make me wear one of those wrist strap leashes whenever we left the house.

  • Yikes! I’ve been there, too. (A fall off a bed for Alex.) Glad to hear that Avelyn’s okay; I’m cracking up at the leash!
