Family Matters, Little O' This

Christmas ’07: The Little Virus That Could

Last week, a house full of puking family members.  This week, a daughter with an ear infection, eye infection, inflamed tonsils and a hacking cough.  Did you know that snot can come out of a kid’s eye?  Me neither, until yesterday, when two thick pipes of bean-green slime began oozing from Avelyn’s tear ducts.  She is miserable and we just started a round of antibiotics for the multiple infections.  I haven’t really slept in the last two days and I am feeling almost as bad as she is.

But let’s not focus on the eye goop, okay?  Let’s take a look at all the fun we managed to squeeze into the holidays in between bouts of barfing.

First there was Christmas morning.  I rose early like, say, a Pioneer Woman, and made some delicious cinnamon buns.  Here’s a photo of my hot buns (now that’s not something I say everyday!):

Breakfast of champions, if you ask me.

Next came gift opening with Steve’s mom.  While we all were lucky enough to score some sweet loot, Avelyn was declared the day’s winner.  She got a bike (!) and a car (!!)

and a sweet baby doll that she loves to kiss.

Later that day we had a nice turkey dinner which turned out mah-velously.  Steve’s brother and girlfriend joined us for the meal and we all had a nice evening visit.  The next day we drove up to the local mountain and stayed at a sweet chalet with Steve’s dad and the other side of the family.  As soon as we arrived, Avelyn got sick.  But we managed to get in a little fun in snow.  Steve and his big brudder went snowmobiling like the crazy fools they are while I cuddled my sick baby girl.

I got coerced into trying cross country skiing for the first time since I was 12.  Last time I went I sprained my knee while going down a tiny incline (shut up), so I haven’t been chomping at the bit to click into those 9 foot-long matchsticks again.  Would you believe that I actually enjoyed myself?  Because I kinda did.  The ol’ heart was a-pumpin’, the conditions were pristine, and I almost could have passed for an athlete.

I said almost.

  • Those look delicious!!!! I bet they didn’t last long at your house! Poor Avelyn, she’s had everything this fall/winter, hasn’t she? Hopefully this is the end of it all and she is on the mend. And, hopefully you don’t get too run-down.
