Family Matters, My Girl

Easter Kicked My Keester

Holidays never go as planned. They never turn out like the Safeway commercials with a happy group of beautiful people laughing together as they bite into their succulent ham. We started this morning with a toddler who was in perma-tantrum mode. As soon as she was pulled from the crib today she was being ornery, difficult, full of screams and shouts and “Noooooo!”s and I was ready to go back to bed before I’d even made it an hour into the day. Before we left for church I managed to catch a few photos of Avelyn in her Easter best.

“Cheeeeeeeeese!”

“Now make a break for it! And quick! There are tantrums to be had! Furniture to destroy! Onward ho!”

We piled into the van but went Steve went to start it, nothing happened. The battery was dead. He shot, “You left your lights on!”

I scoffed, “No I did NOT.” Then I paused and thought of a moment. One of Avelyn’s favourite games is to “drive” the van. She sits in the driver’s seat and plays with the steering wheel and signal light and buttons and, quite obviously, the lights. Which were left on. We scurried to stick some jumper cables on the battery and finally got the beast purring again, arriving to church an embarrassingly 12 minutes late and having to skulk to the very front pew with our heads held low.

Happy Easter!

The day has been better since then. Avelyn had a good, solid nap and I was able to piece together the Easter meal we’ll be sharing with family and friends tonight. Here is the menu:

Ham, homemade pull-apart buns, potatoes au gratin, glazed carrots, steamed asparagus, a 12-litre vat of hollandaise sauce, and for dessert, maple sugar cake (made from scratch, I might add):

Hope the bunny was good to you all and you’ll have plenty of chocolate eggs to last you through the next week.  Mine are all gone; how’d that happen?

  • I LOVE that dress – and that cheesy grin!!! You would never know, looking at that picture, what your morning had been like! I just love showing up to church late, especially when all that’s left is the front row!!! How embarrasing! Hope you had a great dinner, sounds delicious!

  • we were late for church too – but it was the special easter morning service in the park (7:30am) and we had snow – so turnout was a bit low and we got credit just for arriving. Our easter meal was no where near as complex as yours – just ham, mash, beans and salad, but the company was great and I really enjoyed it!

  • I love her smile in the first one!

You guys were not the only late ones – when service started it was half-empty and did not fill up for a good ten-fifteen minutes :)

  • The child has obviously inherited her maternal grandfather’s fluid running gait and trademark economical arm action.

  • Such lovely photos. Your cake reminds me of the cake that I made and decorated for a Autumn/Thanksgiving theme one year. I had used a recipe that was similar to this one: http://www.tasteofhome.com/Recipes/Maple-Tree-Cake.

  • mmmm….cake….
    :)

  • I must have the recipe for that cake. I am drooling over here!

Happy Easter (belated). Avelyn looks adorable as always!

  • Love the name of you post! That cake looks so yummy!

  • Love the name of you post! That cake looks so yummy!
Avelyn may have been workin’ her toddler ‘tude, but she’s still quite cute! ; )

  • I love that first post – all grins and standing up straight and proud!

Isn’t it amazing how the go from grins and giggles to puddles of wailing goo in seconds? Maggie is learning to master this art now. Luckily she just learned to say cheese for the camera and is all of a sudden obsessed with giving her daddy and I kisses. Yin/yang I guess.

Glad it was sunny, green and warm enough for Avelyn’s dress on Easter. We had a fresh 8 inches of snow. Blech.

  • I want a piece of that cake!!!

  • recipe, please.

    your daughter is BEAUTIFUL!!!!

  • Oh, she’s sweetness!

  • Avelyn is adorable! Love the dress!

That cake…yum!! Do share the recipe!! I’d love to try to make it.
