This afternoon I was at the park and Avelyn was walking around with a bottle of milk dangling from her pursed lips. There were other moms around and I felt the need to defend the reason that my giant toddler had a bottle on the jungle gym, but all I would have been able to say was, “I don’t normally give her a bottle in public, but she drank paint this morning and poison control suggested I give her as much milk as possible.” See, kind of a lose-lose explanation.
Yep, Avelyn had her first sampling of paint today. Steve wanted me to paint numbers on the orchard posts so he got a can of paint all open and mixed in the carport. While I was upstairs getting dressed I assumed he was still downstairs, by the paint. But when I walked outside I saw the driveway splattered with paint and a little girl whose face was covered, coughing, “Yucky!”
It didn’t look like she had actually ingested much paint and the inside of her mouth was fairly clean but I phoned Poison Control just to be safe. Luckily it was a water-based paint and since she barely got any into her system I was told not to worry and to simply pump her full of as much milk as she’d take, so it would coat her stomach lining.
Kids.

Oh no! Poor kid. My kid has ingested some things I had to call poison control about also. One of them even started statistics since no kid had ever been reported eating silly putty before.
That sucks. I too had to call poison control once. Brielle drank 1/2 a bottle of infants tylenol when she was 3.
Awww!!! That must have been a little scary! Hope all the milk did it’s job!
Oh Amanda, I am so sorry! Glad she is just fine and enjoying her milk.
Poor Avelyn! I hope she is still feeling okay!
We’re going to go check out the Penticton Farmer’s Market tomorrow morning. If you feel like meeting up let me know! We will probably go around 10am.
Oh, those things are so scary. I always think it’s EASIER for stuff like that to happen when there are more grown-ups around, b/c it’s easy to loose track of who is watching the kids. When I’m home alone with the kids, I know it just ME.
I’m so glad she’s ok!
Poor Avelyn!
Don’t worry I am still nursing my almost 2-year-old and don’t do it in public BUT if that were the case I totally would and I’d feel the need to explain myself just like you!
My brother drank paint thinner when he was 2 years old. Gave my mother a heart attack and an ambulance ride. I fear for my future when this baby starts walking! I can just imagine you walking downstairs to this sight! Glad she’s okay and you know what? Phooey to any woman who dares to judge a fellow mom! What do they know anyway?
Yipes! Hope that there are no ill effects!
I’m sorry but I had to laugh at that, but only because I have a 19-month-old who does the same kind of things. Once I picked her up from her grandma’s house and noticed that she was chewing on something crunchy. I forced her mouth open and saw that she was chewing on gravel and a small piece of glass! Turns out that it was automotive saftey glass and the nurse I talked to said that we would have known by then if she had actually swallowed some. (that was when my heart started beating again)
Oh no, that’s terrible. Glad that she’s ok! :)
reminds me of the time I found Sarah with Cascade dishwashing soap on her lips….
