Iron, On the Rocks

Remember this?  Well, I got a call from my doctor today and it turns out that my latest blood test reveals that I am anemic.  Time to start drinking a raunchy iron vitamin drink everyday and gnawing on a fistful of ground beef.  Yuck.  It’ll be interesting to see if the ice cravings diminish once my iron levels are back to normal.  Until then, I’ll keep on crunching.

  • I’m glad you discovered this so you can start treating it and be on the road to feeling better! I’ve been anemic for 6+ years so definitely understand how tiring it can be!

  • I used to be anemic too. There are pills you can take so maybe that would be easier than a yucky iron drink?!? Hope you feel better soon.

  • i too am anemic…turns out the little bugger’s a bit greedy! i was totally fine before being preggers but not now. i’m taking a supplement, ferrous fumurate, i think it’s called. it’s supposed to be easy on the stomach. i just buy it at safeway and take it with a glass of OJ everynight with my prenate vitamins and i’ve been great ever since. which reminds me, i gotta go take my pills. hope everything works out for you sweetie!

  • I’ve been severely anemic (due to blood loss) and have even had transfusions, and I can say, when you come out of it you’ll realize how much of a toll it’s been taking on you. I’m so glad you figured it out!

  • shelley’s thoughts:
1)i don’t think ice contains iron
    2)steak does
    3)eat steak
4)or at least make ME a steak
5)you should also know that if you take an iron supplement, it may cause your stool (poo) to become black. Do not be afraid, the black poo will not hurt you. But you may wanna decrease your iron intake a little if that happens.
6)i just used the word ‘poo’ on your blog twice…no wait, three times

  • Yum :)

  • Good luck with that iron supplement. EWWWWWW! Double, EWWWWW! I couldn’t stomach them, any of them, they made me sick as a dog. Instead I took my steak with a side of ice until a week after I delivered. Then the ice made me sick. I think I was cured.

  • Gotts ove Shelley’s comment. Hang in there, Amanda.

  • That drink is deeeeesgusting. But, non constipating so that’s good. Seriously sick drink. I convulsed violently after having to consume that horrendous drink. I shudder just thinking of it.
    So yeah…have fun with that.

  • I was anemic when I was pregnant and my doctor just prescribed iron supplements for me, although I didn’t actually need a prescription for them as they’re over-the-counter. They were the type that are easy on the stomach. I’ve never heard of that drink? Maybe you could ask your doctor about just taking iron pills….

  • i’ve had issues with my iron levels for years – i don’t love meat, and i protest to the side affects of the iron pill. however, i found a natural iron vitamin in the health food store that has worked wonders for me. no side affects, at least not for me, and my iron levels are normal! woot! i would definitely recommend trying it, it is called floradix (it comes in liquid as well as vitamins, but i like the pills)

  • I took Repliva pills for my pregnancy induced anemia. No yucky drinks for me, ugh. They are prescription but are really cheap. Without insurance they were $33. But everyone is right about the poo factor… iron makes your poo turn black and has the potential to make you constipated. As if pregnant women around the world need any help with that. It’s worth it though, my energy level sky rocketed after I started the iron. Good luck!

  • That sucks. If you switch to cooking with cast-iron pots and skillets this actually helps a lot too…

  • Do you think Avelyn stole all your iron in the womb and that became her iron will? bah dunt dun! I will be here all night. Just thought you could use a lame joke to cheer you up. No? Oh sorry.
