Friends Are Swell

Room 205

The hospital floor had just been scrubbed with a pungent disinfectant and as we walked down the sterile hallway my nostrils burned.  Her room was the last one on the right hand side and I called her name before stepping in, to ask if she was decent or if she was looking for a few more moments of privacy while her baby suckled herself to sleep.  She was dressed and laying down with her one day old daughter, Olivia Faith, who was sleeping at her side.  She had changed so much in a single day…less red and puffy from the journey down the tight Life Chute, and looking more like the sweet angel she was.
"How are you doing," I asked my friend.
"Good.  But bored.  I’m so glad you’re here," was her response.
I was glad too.
We cracked open the bottle of diet coke we had brought along for the journey and I stole a pitcher of ice chips from the hospital kitchen corner to make our beverages crunch with coolness.
"Do you want some wine gums?"  she offered.
"Maybe just a few, thanks," I accepted.  Then pretty much ate the whole bag.
We gabbed for a while then looked at the clock and noted that we had best be on our way since we needed to make it home in time for our favourite smutty television drama.
"Wait a minute.  Do they have cable in the hospital waiting lounge?"  I questioned, before darting down the hall to check for myself.
Indeed they did.
So we treaded down the hall, pushing Olivia in her clear basinnet, to the lounge where we settled in for an hour of hospital drama.  During the commercial breaks we read old People magazines and got caught up on news of Ashlee’s botched nose jobs, Britney’s post-partum weight loss, and  Nicole Ritchie’s peg legs.
The night was perfect.

You had a great night indeed, and it takes me back to a very similar one 19 months ago!

  • So fun! I bet Christy loved it!

  • I find your description of the hospital smell so funny. I hear it often. I guess spending as much time there as I do, I don’t smell it anymore. Glad you were able to commandeer the lounge tv for Grey’s!You will have so much fun as your girls grow up together.
