Little O' This

In Stitches

I have a daytimer.  It’s a nice little book where I write down my appointments for massages and pedicures (I wish) and my grocery lists.  For years I have employed a neat little trick to keep my daytimer tidy:  I trim the bottom corner off of old pages so that it’s easy to flip to the present date.  I noticed that my daytimer pages hadn’t been trimmed for about three months and I was appalled by their unruly appearance so this morning I pulled out my mom’s brand new, razor sharp kitchen shears and set to hacking off 30 pages in one fell swoop.  Well, swoop I did.  Right into my the inner crook of my middle finger.  I glanced down to see where I had nicked myself and that is when I pretty much barfed in my mouth…I saw not just blood and open skin, but TISSUE and maybe a TENDON.  I felt absolutely no pain, which I assumed was a sign that my body had gone into shock.  I calmy walked into the living room and told my mom, "I just cut myself.  And I can see my insides."  She is a retired nurse so I trust her opinions on health related issues and after she looked at my wound she screamed, "You need to go to the hospital!"
We phoned up one of my mom’s friends and she drove me to the emergency room where I sat on a gurney with the blood-soaked cloth for an hour before a doctor with an indistinguishable accent sewed my skin flaps back together.
Now my throbbing and achey middle finger is covered in gauze and tape and it looks like I am angry at the world, unintentionally flipping the bird all day long.
A lot of people say that Regina is boring.  And some days it is.  I will be more thankful for those boring days in thr future.   Hospital visits and stitches and did I mention the TENDON? A little more excitement than I was looking for.

  • My girl is a little melodramatic-I DID NOT scream,I was very controlled and calm.I think Amanda was just looking for an excuse to get pit of the house because it has been so horribly cold here for the last two weeks(-36 wind chill)!!

  • Poor Manda! I miss you! I’m sending you a virtual DC for comfort. Hurry back, will you?

  • I’m with ya on the brutal finger injury there girlie! Not too fun. I’m glad you were calm. I’m also glad it wasn’t worse, you could’ve severed your tendon and THAT would have been serious.

    Please come home!!!

  • Aw, no! That’s terrible. I hope that it heals quickly (and you can manage to block out the image of the TENDON). Oh my.

  • Oh Gosh. Amanda, sorry to hear that. Thank God for Mums who know what they are talking about. Be careful next time, eh? Maybe invest in a hole punch instead? ;)

  • i hate to burst the bubble but fingertips don’t have tendons.

  • Shelley: I KNOW WHAT I SAW. :)

  • I’m just glad that the injury wasn’t so severe that you weren’t able to join me at the Pizza Hut buffet.

    Get well soon, friend.

  • Hope it feels better soon, maybe you should come home it’s way safer in Summerland and thankfully not -36

  • alright, alright…they DO have tendons. sheesh! ;)

  • Eww. That’s so gross and painful sounding. I hope it heals quickly. Now you have even more reason to insist Steve bring you some fantastic presents from Australia.

  • Oh Amanda… I hope you heal fast so you can no longer look like you are angry at the world! I loved that line…

  • Oh, I think I just passed out FOR you.

    Heal up soon! :)

  • You know it’s serious when a nurse tells you to go to the hospital. My mom’s a nurse too and she usually just shrugs and tells me to have a popsicle to numb the pain. Nice.

  • Sorry to hear about your injury – that’s it, you’re never to prune another apple tree again! Hope it heals soon. We’re missing you girls,
    xxx

  • Oh yeah! My friend Liz, had their baby boy last Wed. Everyone is good – he looks so tiny.

  • Oh no!!! Feel better soon! (This sort of reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where George chases after this car when he thought the driver was giving him the finger, only to find out that the guy had his finger taped up, much like yours.)

  • Hope your hand gets better soon!

Did you get any blood on your book? :) Hope not, though you’d always remember that trip home!

  • Happy Healing. My stomach did a backflip just reading that.
