Family Matters, My Girl

Like Yesterday

Before she left this morning my mom gave Avelyn a kiss on her forehead and as she drew her lips away they left a coral lipstick mark.  I have not washed it off yet.

It reminds me of the ones my mom would leave me with before she and my dad would go out for an evening and leave us with a sitter.  My mom would be wearing her fox-fur coat with the fuzzy pom-poms and she would tickle my face with them, then give me a strong kiss on the cheek, making sure to leave a lipstick print.

I wish she didn’t live so far away.  Having her here for the past few days has been such a treat for me.  I went out in the morning and came home to a house that had been cleaned from top to bottom.  She had vacuumed, cleaned out my stove burners (and let me tell you, it had been a while), scrubbed my scummy tub, and spit-shined the kitchen tile.  She was there to get up with me at 2 am when my feverish baby was sweaty and screaming; she held her so I could rest.

It is so strange to think that in 25 years I will be doing these same things for Avelyn.  She’ll be a grown woman, possibly with children, and it will be my pleasure to scrape grime off of her toilet seats, because she will always be my baby, and I would do anything for her.

Thanks, Mom, for babying me this week.  I appreciate it more than you know.

  • That sounds so great Amanda. I’m glad you had a nice visit.

  • Mom’s are wonderful aren’t they! I hate that my momma lives so far away too but am also greatful. If she lived next door we’d miss out on those great mom “sleepovers” and she wouldn’t be there for 2am. Instead she’d be home asleep in her bed. Don’t get me wrong having her close would be the creme de la creme but at least second best isn’t all bad. Glad you had a fabulous visit and sorry for the story of a post!

  • Sounds like it was grand to have her there. Moms always know what you need, don’t they?

  • Such a sweet post. I have the same memories about my Mom when she would get all dressed up to go out with my Dad.

Glad you guys had a good visit.

  • That is so sweet! Love the dress and the hair!

  • This is the sweetest post!
There are many moments with my children that I get a sense of this moment is a moment they will remember forever.

  • awww. this simple, sweet post almost made me cry dammit. don’t make me ruin my makeup!!! came here through amalah (she paid me.. not really). your 7 year old picture is adorable! :)

  • My mom is 835 miles away, so I feel your pain. She comes to spoil my baby, who is now five but still my baby, but my mom ends up spoiling me rotten.

  • appropriate for mom’s day… I sure hope she reads this :)

  • moms = unconditional love! sounds like my mom, who is probably the only other person besides me, that smiles while getting accidently peed on by Hudson!

  • Awwwww…glad you had a nice visit :)

  • Oh! I have tears in my eyes as I totally feel the EXACT same way about my mom- whom I’m about to go visit! So precious! And we are sooooo lucky to be blessed with such amazing memories and relationships!

  • What a sweet post, it brought tears to my eyes.

  • my mom was an abusive parent. she’s still kind of a bitch sometimes.

  • I just discovered your blog and it is awesome! I think we were seperated at birth. We are the same age and our daughters were born within days of each other, I think. My daughter is named Evelyn and she was born July 20, 2006. And I live on a farm, and my Dad’s name is Steve. Anyway, I love your blog =)

  • Here, here to moms! That sounds like my mom to a T! I am constantly blown away at the most mundane, disgusting jobs she will tackle to make me happy and make life easy. I love how awesome of a grandma she is and I am more than tickled to become her adult friend. So glad you have a mom that loves you and has shown you the true meaning of sacrificial love.

  • Such a sweet post; glad you had a nice visit!
