My Girl

Puddles and Chunks

As I trodded down the hallway to the bathroom for my first pee of the morn, I caught a whiff of something sour. Maybe the dishcloth is rotting. Or perhaps there’s a dead rodent festering under the sink, I thought. The sounds of Avelyn’s rousing distracted me from the stench and I headed to her nursery to lift her from the crib. As soon as I opened her door, however, I was greeted by the scent of intense StinkyStank. I peered down into the crib and saw that Avelyn was sitting in a puddle of her own vomit, smiling. There were chunks of curdled milk in her hair, phlegm-dotted barf soaking her sleeper, and smears of dark amber barf (probably last night’s casserole) streaking her sheets.

Funny thing was, I didn’t gag. Yes, it was foul, but I stripped the bed, eased her out of her wet clothes and into the warm tub to scrub the stench from her hair and body.

I have never felt more like a mom.

She seemed like her usual self after the bath so I sat her in her highchair to see if she had any appetite for breakfast. She did; she gobbled down some banana and puffed wheat. Then she paused, gagged, and her little mouth formed a perfect “o” and her meal soared from her throat like water from a hydrant.

We’re just sticking to liquids for the rest of the day. She seems OK, though. An extra long morning nap and she’s back to her happy self: pulling dvds off the shelf, eating soil from the houseplants, and making important faxes on our machine (note to self: the floor is not a good place for a fax machine; babies like to fax China).

  • Poor little thing. And, poor Mommy. Sounds like you handled the whole barf thing with a lot more grace than I might. I haven’t had to deal with that with Zoe yet (thankfully) although I’m sure the day will come. Hope Avelyn is doing better!

  • Musta caught what livia had. Has the diarreah started?

  • Poor you!

My baby did something similar a few weeks ago. After bedtime my husband and I roamed the house sniffing everything because we couldn’t find the source of a totally terrible smell… finally we found it… my 17 month old baby had barfed and diarrhea pooped all over her bed.

Hope your baby is feeling better really soon!

  • This post reminds of the first time Makenna threw up. Totally alarming! I didn’t know little people could do that?

  • Way to earn your mommy badge. That really is a sweet story even though you are talking about such a gross thing. It is amazing when those moments hit you and your chest swells with pride at how much you love your child and how there is no task so lowly that you don’t lovingly and willingly do it. Someday she will read this and thank you.

  • This is so, so true. I used to run away when people even thought they might barf, for fear that I might involuntarily do so myself, but now? If I sense that my kid is going to throw up, I’ll even put my hand out to catch it. Funny how motherhood changes us.
