Domesticity, Little O' This, My Girl

Pillas.

Yesterday I was griping about my desire for creativity.  Today I actually did something about it.  I marched myself into Fabricland, bought a couple metres of some fabrics that caught my eyes and came home and made these:

Most of you probably won’t understand the magnitude of these quaint little throw pillows.  If you had ever seen any of the other two things I have ever attempted to sew (1.  a sundress that ended up resembling a gunny sack with spaghetti straps and 2.  the curtains to Avelyn’s nursery window which ended up looking like, I don’t know, vomit) you too would be quite impressed with these cushy creations of mine.  I think the key is that I actually read the manual and learned to thread the sewing machine properly so I was able to control the tension.  This is new for me.  Also, pillows are pretty much the easiest thing you can make.  If you can’t make pillows, you should pretty much stop trying to sew anything.  This girl’s Pillow 101 was invaluable to me.  Kelly, my soul sista, thanks for breakin’ it down and giving us the play-by-play on how to make pillas.

Next week?  SOCK MONKEYS.  Or maybe more pillows.  They’re so quick and easy.

To close, Avelyn has some life-guiding advice for you all this weekend.

  • Oh I love the fabric! Once upon a time I used to sew. I made a pretty dress, and hair scrunchies and, oh the shame, a pair of underwear for Mark with an elephant trunk. I sold my old clunky sewing maching, along with my entire collection of Archie comics for food in college and now, after reading this, I sort of feel nostaligic about it.

  • Very nice pillow fabric. They totally pop out of your couch! And, Avelyn.. good advice!

  • Great work Amanda! I love them.

  • Those are beautiful. Great color combo with the pattern and the solids. Love em! OK, Amanda, what CAN’T you do…sewing…photography…..artist…writer….

  • I don’t know WHAT you mean by not being creative. Those cartoons/comics that you made for Steve are so cute. I bet that you’re just like one of those super talented graffiti artists who haven’t ALLOWED themselves to be discovered for real. And those pillows? How cute. You go girl. Now you should start doing cartoons on the pillows…you’re sitting on a goldmine!!

  • They’re even prettier that you described this morning! Go YOU!!

    Looking forward to tonight :)

  • Love the brown floral fabric. Very Posh.

  • Great job! I too think you’re way more talented than you let yourself believe. And Avelyn, thanks for the advice!

  • I love the fabric! Great job- wanna come over this way and sew some for me? Or better yet- I’m coming through the okanagan on my holidays this week! Just kidding! Seriously, love the fabric!

  • I’m impressed…they make your couch look tres chic!
I had a couple of decorating ideas for your lvng rm. come to me in the middle of the night. Avelyn’s baby looks have turned into toddler looks!

  • Could it be that some of Oma’s sewing skills have been passed on to you? Certainly your mom and I missed it. Fantastic pillows! Keep it up.

Avelyn is so wise at such a young age, or was that just to ease her teething discomfort?

I agree with Sue, Avelyn is growing up.

Great to have these pictures as she grows and changes.

You have made no comments about your birthday – decide not to have one this year?

  • OOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhh
    AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
    OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

SAHHHHWEEEET! You do have more than numb chuck skills and computer skills. Add this to the list you pillow making maniac!

I second the comment about your Steve pictures. Love them. I swear you and I are twins. My canvas of choice is the bathroom mirror using a dry erase marker. We can leave some pretty amazing pictures and messages for each other on there. So fun to wake up to…although we can’t save them like Steve’s precious artwork. Just a suggestion.

  • i LOVE them :)
