Family Matters, Little O' This, My Girl

Fair is Foul and Foul is Fair

“Hey! I’ve got a great idea! Let’s go to the Armstrong Fair!” suggested my mother-in-law.

“Sounds good! Let’s hop in the car. What do you think, Avelyn?”

“Oh. I see. It’s gonna be like this,” I surmised.

And it was. For the full two hour drive down to Armstrong she was losing it in the backseat, hurling keys at peoples’ heads, foaming at the mouth and madly waving her arms.

Once we made it to the fair her mood lifted a touch and she was interested in looking at the animals.

“Behold, daughter of mine. ‘Tis a goat. Feel how soft its ear is,” chimed Steve.

“DAD! This stupid goat is all up in ma’ grill! Get me outta here. For realz,” she squirmed.

“I hate my life so much. Really. You have NO IDEA,” she wept.

It was pretty much like this the rest of the day. Avelyn would be happy and mildly interested in what was happening, then something would irk her and she’d turn into a rabid beast. She’s got a few molars busting through so she’s got a bit of an excuse, but still.

We saw lots of cows and sheep and goats and pigs. I saw many examples of why I am glad to no longer be a nursing mother. It’s beautiful and all but look what it does to your teats.

Sawdust on the nipples. The sacrifices a mother makes.

One of the highlights was when we listened to a band playing and Avelyn was busting a move on the dirty dance floor. She loves music so much and it’s always a joy to see her bopping to the beat and clapping her hands. Especially when she’s wearing a sweet jean jacket and looking like a hick.

All in all it was a fun way to spend the day. And Avelyn snored the whole way home. It’s true that when a baby sleeps her innocence is renewed. I completely forgot about her snarly day and just enjoyed listening to her breathe.

  • Poor Avelyn. Something just wasn’t going right in her little world. But look at you and Steve taking it all in stride!

    I love Avelyn’s cute little denim number…

  • I love her face in your family picture! And yes – molars suck. We’re going through an extended bad phase here – except it only kicks in after 5pm every night.

  • I would totally frame the family picture. It’s priceless. And the jean jacket is most definitely sweet.

  • Avelyn’s really impressed eh? Even with a grumpy face she is adorable…How does that work?!? Love the jean outfit!

  • I love her expression in the family portrait. LOVE IT!! Your girl’s got some ‘tude. She is so precious.

  • The nipples…I just had to caress my boobs for a moment and apologize to them if I ever mistreated them in that manner ever. The jean jacket is awesome. Actually I love her jeans….I can’t wait till Chloe can walk so her clothes look better then being all scrunched up into the diaper region.
Totally had a dream that Ryan and I came to visit you and we had nothing to talk about. clearly a dream….clearly!

  • What a grogeous post! Great photos :) The word “priceless” to describe Avelyn in that shot of the three of you was in my head even before I read the other comments. Just hilarious! She is adorable even when she is cranky. You dress her in such cute outfits!

Scroll down to the last few and you’ll see she had a lovely time at our Museum’s sculpture garden – that is until she decided it was no longer fun. The Museum is in our neighborhood, so we had walked there – she was just like A in her carseat for the entire walk home and the whole ‘hood was subjected to her crankiness!

  • I love the family pic!

Is that an Alpha Omega car seat? And if so, do you like it? (the questions I ask these days!)

  • Don’t you hate those Fun Family Days you plan, only to have the little ingrates- the ones you are going out of your way for- scoff at it all and behave like a screaming hyena? Oh, wait. That’s MY girls. Yours couldn’t possible be that horrid- she’s even beautiful when she’s crabby! =)
